Almost everyday, I receive emails from Nigerian gospel artistes, promoters, bloggers, etc sharing new music with me. While I would love to tell you that every single song I listen to is awesome, uplifting and unforgettable (in a good way), that is not the case.

So, I have decided that in addition to sharing new releases with you, I will also compile a list of recommended, hand-selected songs for you to add to your music playlist. These songs will be uplifting, inspiring and encouraging to power your week.

Who doesn't want that? :-)

If you have any songs you would like to recommend, kindly send the relevant details (music file, i.e. mp3 or mp4, cover art and press release / biography) to music@therelentlessbuilder.com.

Here is the first set of recommended Nigerian gospel songs to power your week.

1. Bunibe - Obiora Obiwon

Released in September 2015, Bunibe is a "unique pop interpretation of the trendy highlife polyrhythmic sounds traceable to south-eastern Nigeria, Obiwon’s origin." Obiwon gives you different scenarios, everyday life experiences where you have to "bunibe" your way to victory.

According to Obiwon, Bunibe means "to lift," "to raise" and "to praise."

The song was produced by Phat-E.

2. God Dey - Anyi Egbe

The first thing that hits you when you hear this song is that afrobeat flavor. It's hard to miss. And in this song, Ifeanyichukwu "Anyi" Egbe reminds us that we serve a living God. Let this song remind you of God's faithfulness this week.

I'm serving a living God, I am serving a living God. That part is stuck in my head. :-)

The song was produced by Johnny Drille.

3. Floodgates (The New OverFlow) - Obiora Obiwon

Floodgates (The New OverFlow) was released in June 2015 as part of Obiwon's forthcoming album.

It also commemorates his 10th year in the Nigerian music industry.

What makes this song particularly special for me is that it samples, and in fact, incorporates a classical song that is dear to me: Lift Up Your Heads by George Frideric Handel (part of Handel's Messiah). The lyrics of that song are taken from Psalm 24.

I love Obiwon's remake and the unique Naija flavor he injects in it. This song gets me excited every time. :-)

I discovered this lovely song by Raymond Okoro on Selah Afrik, a Nigerian gospel music website. This song just always stands out in my mind for many reasons, but I'll share two here:

(1) it's like the artiste is having a heartfelt conversation with God and lets us listen to it; and (2) the beautiful blend and balance between the artiste's strong vocals and the instruments (especially the piano).

I'll let your ears judge. :-)

5. Feeling You - Psalmos Featuring Kenny K'ore

This is the 2nd collaboration between Psalmos and Kenny K'ore that I'm aware of. The 1st, of course, is Ku'se, a delighful duet. :-)

Feeling You incorporates a popular (and might I add, "classic") Nigerian praise and worship song.

Let me refresh your memory:

He is all over me,

He's moving me around

The Holy Ghost power is moving me around

Sounds familiar, ba? Well, in this song, Psalmos and Kenny K'ore describe the tangible presence of God and declare that they are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Neither am I. :-)

Do you remember that nursery rhyme about the old woman who lived in a shoe?

You don't?!

*shaking head in slow motion*

That is totally unacceptable! And yes, I am judging you. We have to rectify (chei, see grammar!) this before Christmas.

Before the month of November ends, you must re-learn this nursery rhyme by force. No, you don't have a choice. :-)

Here is the version most of us are familiar with, courtesy of Wikipedia:

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.

She had so many children, she didn't know what to do;

She gave them some broth without any bread;

Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

I have tried to imagine what the Nigerian equivalent of broth and bread would be and I don't know. Maybe rice (or eba) without stew, or akamu (pap) without akara. Let me know if you can figure this one out.

So, I came up with 21 questions for this fictional character, although in today's world, I am sure such a woman exists. But I doubt that she lives in a shoe.

If she does and thinks it's perfectly normal, then her problems are so much bigger than having too many kids to care for.

#YabaLeft

As for whether or not these questions are "intriguing," you decide, ehn.

In no particular order, here are my questions for the old woman who lived in a shoe:

Who's the daddy? (a.k.a Na who give you belle?)

Where's the daddy?

Have you ever heard of birth control?

Do they all have the same father?

Are they all your biological children or are some of them adopted?

How do you remember or keep track of all their names?

Are you planning on having any more kids?

How much do you spend on groceries every week? Every day?

Have you been approached for a reality TV show?

Is there another one on the way? (*cough, cough* I mean, are there any buns in the oven?)

*pointing at two random children* These two, are they twins? Any other multiple births?

How do you tell them apart?

How will you pay for college/university? Or Trade School?

Are you familiar with the nursery rhyme? Any regrets?

*Pointing at the shoe-shaped house* Whose idea was this? Was the architect drunk when he designed this?

Got any pets? Why not?

Do you take a headcount of all your kids? How often?

Do they all speak at once?

Are you ready to be a grandmother?

Do they have special talents?

Do you get any sleep?

Now, I have a question for you: if you could ask the old woman any question(s) what would it be? Feel free to ask away. I'll make sure she answers them. :D

When TY Bello released her current album, The Morning SongBook on October 10, 2014 (10-10-2014), there were a couple of songs that I was immediately drawn to.

One of them was the 2nd track titled, Alagbada Ina. From the moment I heard it, I knew it was just a matter of time before I would share it here. So, here I am sharing it with you! :-)

Alagbada Ina is one of the Yoruba names for God, and it means (you guessed right) The One who is dressed in fire, or "clothed with fire."

In this song, another Yoruba name for God pops up: Arugbo Ojo, which means "Ancient of Days."

With these descriptions, you can already guess what this song is about.

On this track, TY Bello collaborates with a Nigerian gospel artiste from Benue State, Msugh Anom. You can check out his other songs on ReverbNation. He currently resides in Makurdi, Benue State.

Msugh Anom

Honestly, after listening to this song, I was hoping and praying that there would be more collaborations between them. It hasn't happened yet, but you know, hope is a powerful thing. :D

What I particularly liked about this song was this: no person outshines the other, There's just a balance and each person "owns" his/her part. Just lovely! No complaints from me.

All that is left is to encourage you to listen to it for yourself on SoundCloud. For some reason, I can't share the widget here. :-(

Every now and then, you come across songs that make you pause, ponder and reflect.

That's what One Experience of You did for me.

Sure, it's not a gbao gbao, scatter dis place, shake bodi for Jesus kind of song.

No, this is clearly a worship song.

But that's not the only reason I'm sharing this here.

What really impressed me was the effort and care put into packaging this song. For goodness sakes, these folks actually compiled a booklet, complete with a chord chart (Yes, the notes and everything so you can reproduce it at home or church or anywhere else) and a list of all those who made this project happen.

Who does that nowadays?

I'm still scratching my head and waiting for an answer o ....

No, answer, right? I didn't think so.

Anyway, before I really get carried away, here's the booklet and the story behind the song:
FLAMZNATION is a group of students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) united by one purpose: to worship God.

Now, I'll let them share their story.

The Story Behind "One Experience of You"

2 years ago, this June, the Lord laid in our heart a desire and unquenchable thirst for his presence. Students from University of Lagos, Akoka with a burning heart of worship and utmost Love for God called Flamznation.

We started having meetings “little hangouts” where in these meetings we do nothing else than intense worship with just acoustic guitars, prayers and bible study. The presence of God was always powerfully felt within and around the open air meetings sometimes leaving us slain on our knees and hearts abandoned in that atmosphere of awesomeness and beauty.

In these years, God has taken us through the process and here we are -our first Single track “One Experience of You” produced by Sola Soetan. This song incites a deeper connection with the Lord, moving on from the phase knowledge of hear-say to having a uniquely personal encounter of heaven.

As we look to the future with Jesus as our focus, we trust in him to perfect the vision for which he has called us into reaching out to young people all over the world with a message of God’s Amazing gift of Love toward us all.The next seven years and beyond, we trust the Lord for platforms to better achieve the idea for which we came to being. We are expanding our capacity and deploying a wider variety of tools so as to reach out to our audience.

Before I say anything, guess who produced this song?

No, not me!

Nelly Viano a.k.a NVBeatz, the artiste also doubled as the producer of this track.

Now, you'll have to listen to assess it for yourself. :-)

Here is the artiste's bio and the other details he shared alongside this release:

Artiste Bio:

Oghenerobor Nelson Ewomaviano is a gospel artist popularly known by his stage name NELLY VIANO. The Way You Do is his first gospel song but not his first sound. He was part of the RNCS MEN music band before they had despair after the release of a hit single BETA MATTER. He started music professionally since 2010 and has worked with popular gospel artist KELLY LYON. Music became bigger and interesting for him after he joined the BELIEVERS LOVEWORLD ENUGU 1 in 2013. He got lots of motivation for being close to the church. This is where his success story begins.

Song Description:

"All through the time of trouble, devastation and restlessness all in one sense, Jesus never let me down. He has shown me that I truly share the same DNA with him. He has delivered me from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. I owe him nothing but praise. My lips shall never stop praising Him."

If you are even a casual or occasional listener of Nigerian gospel music, you'll notice that some songs share the exact same title.

One of such recurring song titles is Jigidem, which in Igbo means "Hold me" or "Uphold me."

I started compiling this list about two years ago (can you believe it?) and yet I have just 6 songs to share today. Honestly, I would have loved a much longer list, but it's just these 6 songs for now.

In no particular order, here are six songs titled "Jigidem" rendered almost entirely in Igbo:

Numen - Jigidem

6 Team - Jigidem Aka (Hold my hands)

Axios Choir - Jigidem

Brother Emmanuel and Brother Lazarus (Voice of the Cross) - Jigidem Onye Nwem

Uchay Davis - Jigidem

Winny A1 - Jigidem

And now, the fun part: listen to each song. Enjoy!

1. Numen - Jigidem

I came across this song several years ago in law school, and I have loved it since then. It was only a matter of time before I shared it here. :-)

P.S. I have looked for this song or even the album to buy. No such luck. Why now, Numen? :-(

2. Six Team - Jigidem Aka

Six Team or 6-Team's song titled Jigidem Aka (Hold my hands) was my introduction to the music of these young men many years ago. They also released another song (Eyen O). But today, we're featuring only Jigidem Aka in this well-produced music video. Listen to it, and thank me later. :D
Axios is the choir of Babcock University. HobNobs: Which is your favorite McVitie's biscuit?

So, what prompted this post?

An advert o! A radio jingle.

I was listening to Inspiration FM sometime last week, and heard this (for lack of a better word) "razz" advert. I was shocked to find out it was for McVitie's. Okay, call me bush, but in all my life, I have never heard a McVitie's advert. Or seen one for that matter. Yes, I am one of those people who believe that a child is just born with the knowledge that you haven't lived until you've eaten McVitie's Digestives biscuits.

Or maybe it's an acquired taste, just like malt v. root beer. Yes, some people actually hate malt, especially in this country. But calm down. I am not one of such people. *raises fist high* #MaltForever

Growing up in Nigeria, I remember when people started selling these "fake digestives" biscuits. As far as I was concerned, they were fake for two reasons:

They were just as cheap as Okin biscuits (both the round and rectangular ones)

You could see the biscuit inside the wrapper ... before opening it. Abomination! (You know the "original" digestives are in an opaque wrapper or sometimes in a paper box, right?)

Anyways, I have made the mistake of eating some other brands of digestives biscuits over the years. Trust me, McVitie's is the clear winner.

But, possibly what I detested even more than fake digestives was the other McVitie's biscuit. I have to whisper the name, so this other biscuit won't feel bad.

Wait, biscuits don't have ears?

Hallelujah!

It's HOB-NOBS!

And I detest them deeply.

That oat-y, "more wholesome" taste could not possibly compete with Digestives. No controversy.

That's all I will say. For now.

What about you? Which do you prefer: Digestives or Hob-Nobs? None? Please share!

P. S. I didn't forget Rich Tea o. ;-) But Digestives will always be Number 1 abeg. Pele, Rich Tea. Ma binu.

How is your week going? Mine is going well, so far.

Regardless of how your week is going, you need to remember why you are alive and why you should be grateful. That's where Boluwaduro comes in. She reminds us in her song, Reason, that Jesus is the reason why we live.

Here's more information on this artiste and the song:

Gospel music minister, Boluwaduro, is out with a brand new single, a powerful rock piece titled "REASON" featuring one of Naija's finest vocalists and music ministers, Psalmos.

In Boluwaduro's words:

"Reason," is one of such divine gifts from God released by the Holy spirit to me during my quiet time. It's a song that renews our stand and decision to choose Jesus Christ over and over again, a song to remind us of our purpose here on earth.

The Bible says in Galatians 2 vs 20 "For I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ that liveth in me." That's the message in Reason."

In this dying world, everything points to the fact that true Christians can barely survive the challenges and temptations of each day but of ourselves we can do nothing, though we are in this world, we are not of this world, but Christ in us is the hope of glory. Pls enjoy and be blessed by it."

You probably read this, and thought:

"Wait a minute, isn't it the other way round?"

My answer: "Does it matter?"

The bottom line is that something is not adding up. And in any case, I think you're more likely to meet the sort of person this post is dedicated to.

Now, I'm sure if you read through my posts, you can pinpoint some grammatical errors. Hopefully, they are not the sort of errors that make you bang your head on the wall, while wailing mournfully, "Why me?" over and over again.

For your head's sake, I hope not. *sticks tongue out*

But, I do notice obvious grammar mistakes, which I find appalling, especially from people who actually speak what I consider "good English." You know, the kind that doesn't make you break out in hives and ask for your Mummy!

For the record, I have observed this in Nigerians and Non-Nigerians alike.

By obvious grammar mistakes, I mean, for example, spelling errors that are just simply unforgivable. For example:

Joe is a Former

(Former what? Pepper seller?)

Instead of:

Joe is a Farmer

Another example:

Are you a Patience in this hospital?

(Patience ke? What's her last name?)

As opposed to:

Are you a patient in this hospital?

But this one is even good. I have seen people misspell their own names (true story, no jokes), addresses, and even misspell words they asked me to spell for them, even though I spelled it out r-e-a-l-l-y slowly.

I don't get it.

There's a disconnect somewhere. The question is, "Does this person know or even care?"

I think the problem is that some people write the way they speak, which is okay in certain contexts (text messages, informal settings, etc). But for job applications, and other formal settings where these things really matter, it could mean the difference between a pass and a fail.

Grammar rules are more important in your writing than in your speech. Why? Because you can get away with mis-pronunciation or maybe even fake your way through pronouncing a word properly, but spelling? You can't fake it. No, you can't even run away from it.

Even your computer will put a red line under misspelled words and ask you, "Mister Man, what do you think you're doing? Fix this immediately!"

And don't even get me started on Facebook and all the shellers that congregate there, daily unleashing their bad grammar on unsuspecting readers ... Lawd!

If you read some of these errors ehn, fear go catch you! In fact, a cold chill will run down your spine, and the room will spin and you'll feel dizzy ... Just because of bad grammar. Chai!

Twitter, nko? I won't go there. No. I'll stay in my lane.

Here's another example:

Or maybe I should just let the t-shirt speak for itself.

Maybe not.

Anyway, it reads:

Let's Eat Grandma

As opposed to:

Let's Eat, Grandma

Commas really save lives.

And all the grandmas said: "Amen!"

What horrible grammar mistakes have you encountered? Written or Spoken? Share, share, share away!

For the record, Pikin means "Child." Straight from the Nigerian Pidgin English dictionary ... if such a thing exists.

You know it is possible for a child from a good background, with "proper home training" like we say, to stray. And the place where the child manifests that waywardness is in school.

Of course, when a child misbehaves (and it doesn't even matter whether it's a child in primary or secondary school), everybody automatically starts pointing fingers. If a young adult is misbehaving at the university level, then s/he is an "agbaya."* There's no other word for it because we assume that at that level you're mature enough to tell right from wrong and make the right choices.

But for primary and secondary school students (yes, I left out the nursery school students because at that age, they are expected to be naughty), when the finger pointing starts, the blame ultimately falls on the parents. Yes, peer pressure might be a factor, but parents are still held responsible for their children's actions. That's just the way it works. Transferring the blame to the teachers makes no sense.

Why?

If the teacher observes a student misbehaving in school, the teacher and/or school authorities can discipline the child accordingly. But guess what? They will still have to report this to the parents to "take over" the discipline of the child and take necessary action.

In short, no one can raise your child(ren) for you. Ultimately, parents must take responsibility for their children's actions, while they're still under their roof.

What do you think? Agree or Disagree? Please share your thoughts.
Jesu N'Abba means "Jesus My Father" in Esan, and this song by Benita Iyere-Okojie is essentially a prayer "appreciating God for His daily mercies while also asking for continued protection and favour." [Source]

I was listening to a radio program recently and some of the listeners mentioned this: they joined secret cults in secondary school. Their teachers knew, but their parents had no clue.

How come?

And since when did secondary students start joining cults?

Honestly, this was the first time I had heard this. I was used to hearing of students in universities and polytechnics parading their schools campuses openly declaring they were cultists. Unfortunately, that is normal. In fact, there are students who join these cults at their parents' insistence (for real). So, it's not just a "student" problem.

But why on earth would secondary school students join secret cults? What happened to computer club and debate society? (Lol! You can just tell how old-fashioned I am, but seriously ....)

I guess it makes sense when you look at it this way: cults are essentially gangs. And gangs target young people. Secondary school students range from ages 9 to 18 (that's a very conservative estimate. I am sure kids much younger than 9 years old are making it to secondary school). At this age, they are vulnerable, impressionable and highly susceptible to peer pressure.

So, if secondary school students are joining cults, what can we expect for primary school students? Nursery school, nko? Okay, that's really pushing it, but you get my point: young kids are being recruited to join secret cults.

Maybe this is a case for home schooling, but you know, you cannot insulate children from everything. And parents cannot follow their children to school. But, they can ensure they are several steps ahead of these bad influences, and prepare their children to deal with it when the "temptation" or pressure comes.

Have you heard of secret cults in secondary schools before? Please share.

After listening to this song, one thing should be clear: A lazy person cannot be friends with Tolazee.

*laughs*

Okay, not really. I'll let you listen first and then judge for yourself what Tolazee is saying.
THE REVIEW

Likes: There's a distinct reggae feel to this song, which hits you in the face right from the intro. I was nodding my head and swaying from the very beginning. The reggae feel works very well with the message and language mix chosen, i.e. English, Yoruba and a little pidgin.

What I particularly love about this song is that although Tolazee douses the lyrics with Yoruba proverbs and sayings, he also sings a good chunk in English. The effect is that non-Yoruba speakers, or basic Yoruba speakers like me who may not know the meaning of some of the Yoruba words, can get the gist of the song without very little effort. That way, the message is not lost to your listeners. I think Tolazee definitely gets that right.

There is a strong flow from the beginning to the end. His use of catchy rhymes shows his mastery of both languages i.e. English and Yoruba. For example:

There is dignity in labor

Atelowo eni ki i tan eni je, You can ask your neighbor

The instrumentation also compliment the style of music chosen. There is a definite playfulness in the outro where he says "Sise" in a funny accent, but it does not deplete the amount of seriousness in the message.

Kudos to TJ Beenie, who produced this song.

Dislikes: The songwriting needs a little work for the verses (not the chorus). Some of the lyrics seemed to be stretched too much over a few notes, but it was not enough to be a distraction.

Recommendations: Fine tune your songwriting on future projects.

How often do you come across a duet sang in Yoruba? Rarely. What about a duet sang in Ekiti dialect? Even rarer.

So, now you know why I had to share this song with you. It's titled Ku'se by Psalmos, featuring Kenny K'ore, and it's a must-listen-to-by-fire-and-by-force.

Ku'se literally means "Well done" and it's a song of thanksgiving and praise to God.
I just discovered and fell in love with this song around December last year, and I knew it was just a matter of time before it made it to the blog.

So, here it is in all its deliciously harmonious, traditionally rich glory.

Happy New Year! 2015 is off to a great start, and what better way to celebrate than with music? This song just sets the tone for the year. But before we go there, let me just say that I am truly grateful for all your support in 2014. You guys are more awesome than you know, and I look forward to conquering 2015 with you guys!

And now for some music ....

I heard Ogecha's Time to Celebrate around Christmas last year, and I knew I had to share it here. I already downloaded it and let's just say it's "Trending" on my playlist.

Produced by Gospel Obi, a.k.a Gospel on the Beatz, Time to Celebrate is Ogecha's first single since her album "All For You" was released. She did not disappoint at all on this track.

“Time To Celebrate” is a fusion of pop and Afro music, and a true testament to her personal style of lyrical aptitude and dedication to creating good music.

So, what does Relentless do on Christmas Eve? She puts up Christmas music. Apparently. I know I've been away for a while, but it's all for a good cause.

The songs I am about to share were sent to me by various Nigerian gospel artistes, and I thought it would be better to share it today (instead of say ... Boxing Day).

Plus, you know you can be "special" like me and listen to Christmas songs all year round, right? Yes, let's be "special" together ... Lol!

So, here are the songs in no particular order:

1. Eloho Efemuai - Hark the Herald

Eloho sings a popular Christmas carol, Hark the Herald, which she shares with us this holiday season. Here's more information on this artiste and her song courtesy of the press release:

This obvious carol may not necessarily be a new carol in terms of lyrics but totally brand new judging from the perfect vocal delivery by Eloho in "Hark The Herald" and the Midas touch of Ace producer, Flo Akiremi Nathan.

"Hark The Herald" sets us in the mood of the celebration of our Lord Jesus Christ and also keeps us in tune with the merriment of Christmas.

This will blow your mind and everyday will suddenly become CHRISTMAS when you listen.

ABOUT ELOHO:

Eloho is not just a Worship Pastor; she is a singer, a worshipper, and a Christian recording artiste who sings her heart out for the Lord. She loves God, she loves people and according to her “she is crazy about Jesus!!!”

She is the program coordinator of Heartsong a charity whose mission is to stir up the kind of worship that touches God and transforms lives; by hosting praise and worship events in the city of Aberdeen with renowned and upcoming worship leaders.

Since setting up Heartsong in 2011, Releasing her first Debut Album "Arise" in March 2014 and accompanied with “Halleluyah” Video in October 2014, Eloho has organised and coordinated three worship nights in the city of Aberdeen with the likes of Ian White, Bob Fitts, Chevelle Franklin, D’Amadeus, Sola Okunuga, Ify, Alexander Victor, Folasade, Steph Macleod, Anna Barton and a host of others.

Eloho was nominated for AGMA Artiste of the Year Europe and “Arise” Album of the Year in July 2014. She was awarded the Woman of Praise Award in June 2014 and also PGMA award for contribution to Praise and Worship in the UK.

2. Gold Help Owen - Eyen Edong

As you might have guessed from the title, it's not an English Christmas song. Nope. It's an Ibibio Christmas song. Oh, you've never heard one before? Well, aren't you lucky?! Download and Enjoy!
Keresimesi is an upbeat Christmas song rendered in Yoruba and English. In Olivz's words:

Keresimesi, its a song about sharing. Sharing love, sharing happiness, sharing sharing sharing, with everyone. Everybody needs a dose.

I had actually heard this song last year but never shared it here. Well, now is a good time to do so, don't you think? Keresimesi is the Yoruba word for Christmas. Hope that helps.
CMJ (Christ's Messenja) is a gospel artiste who is originally from Adamawa State. He sent me three of his singles months ago, but I am just getting round to sharing them here. Better late than never, ba?

Here's some more information on CMJ courtesy of his press release:

The hip hop world has sprung yet another great asset in the person of Isaac Hanokam Hassan a.k.a., Christ’s MessenJa (CMJ).

An indigene of Adamawa state, CMJ grew up in the city of Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria. The third of three children. He was introduced to the Christian Hip Hop Culture in 2007 and has been hooked ever since.

In 2008, CMJ co-founded Da’ B.O.A.R.D. (By the Order of the Almighty Rescue the Destitute), which consisted of F.R.A.Z.E. D.I.G.O.N., Nuhu Gaina of Stage One and Paul Yila (Espeey), among others. Though the group disbanded in 2010 for various reasons, it served as a platform to shape and direct future ministries.

CMJ not only displays a passion for the truth of the gospel, but proclaims it skillfully as well. With a diploma in Information Technology under his belt, he released a mixtape in 2012 titled “Turn it Up” which has received much praise and all 11 tracks can be downloaded from his reverbnation page.

Along with being a burgeoning emcee, CMJ is also a songwriter and composer, showcasing lyrical expertise and depth. His motivation to write and rap comes from his love for God and the experiences that have shaped his life.

CMJ has been musically motivated by an eclectic group of musicians and singers. These include the likes of 116 Clique, Ambassador, Shai Linne, Sho Baraka, Pastor AD3, FLAME, Canton Jones, and JR.; and producers like Derek Minor, Wit, and Esso. He also enjoys the work of B.O.U.Q.U.I., Rooftop MCs, N.U.T.T.Y. Josh, G. Eleos, and Frank Edwards.

CMJ continues to minister to different audiences composed largely of young people. He has begun work on his next yet-to-be-titled album, which will be released soon.

“I’ve been served with abundant grace. That’s why I’m trying to touch the mic.”

Happy New Month! Can you believe there are just 2 months left before we welcome 2015? Amazing! It finally got cold at my end, but I am still in denial about winter's arrival. Still hiding those boots away and wearing open-toed shoes. For now.

Atchoooooooo!

But, let's get to today's topic.

Generally, Nigerian school girls are expected to do something with their hair, especially if they attend public schools and government schools. Private schools are more liberal, in my opinion, and some of them even allow students use hair extensions (attachment) during the school year. But, I suppose with all the millions their parents sink into their school fees, that's a minor trade off, ba?

However, most students attend government schools or public schools for secondary school, and it is these schools that tend to have restrictive rules for girls' hair.

For the girls who attend these schools, the choices for grooming their hair fall into two categories:

Braid (or thread) your hair

Cut your hair

We have already looked at some of the popular hairstyles for Nigerian school girls. It does not matter whether you choose that hairstyle yourself, or your school picks the hairstyle for you every week. Bottom line is you can't just "pack" your hair and come to school. You must braid your hair. Period.

But, what about those girls who attend schools where they are required to cut their hair? What then?

Well, for starters, it means they don't get to pick any hairstyle. That has already been decided for them. There is one single hair style, and it's called "low cut."

Why do schools have this requirement? I have a few answers, but you can add your own too. Here are my answers:

Uniformity: Since schools already regulate their students' appearances with uniforms, it makes sense that the students' hair would also be regulated. So, for the sake of making everyone look uniform (in a good way, hopefully), they insist on having all students keep their hair in the simplest, fuss-free way possible, i.e. low cut. My problem with this is that you can still achieve uniformity without making students cut their hair. I think it's a control thing. Which brings us to # 2.

Control: Schools already control other aspects of students' lives: their schedules, what time they go on break, etc. That's just the nature of schools. Hair is just one more aspect they can control.

Economics: Let's face it: unless you braid your hair yourself or have someone who does it for free, braiding your hair every week or even every two weeks can really add up. It's an expense. Not to mention the horrors of braiding your hair in the market, for example. However, maintaining a low cut is also an expense, but it is definitely cheaper than braiding your hair every week. Possibly schools realize this and insist on students cutting their hair to keep the cost of maintenance down. But, I am not buying this argument.

I think it makes more sense to give students the choice to decide what they want to do with their hair, with some guidelines, rather than flat out insisting on low cut.

What are your thoughts? Why do you think schools insist on girls cutting their hair? Do you agree or disagree? Kindly share.

When you gain admission to a secondary school in Nigeria, the school authorities tend to load parents and students with a lot of information. The school's prospectus is one of the books they hand to you that's literally loaded with tons of information.

The official definition of the prospectus is "a book or document that provides information about a school, business, etc." Of course in our case, it's for a school.

So, what sort of information is written in a prospectus? Well, I'm glad you asked. Here's a little list:

School song (Pro Unitate, Floreat Collegium, etc)

School's History

Official names of school buildings and the history and purpose of each (e.g. gymnasium)

Provisions, Clothing and other things needed for boarding school (if the school is a boarding school)

Books and Book store information

School Uniform and House wear (for boarders) and where to buy them (or if you need to hire a tailor to sew them)

Important Staff Members (e.g. Principal, Vice-Principal, etc)

National Anthem and Pledge (in case you didn't learn them in primary school)

School houses (Hadeija house, Danfodio house, etc), sports teams, activities (e.g. Interhouse Sports)

Rules

But since we live in a technologically advanced world, some schools have taken to posting this information online on their websites (yes, in Nigeria) or even posting the prospectus as an e-book / PDF on the website. Yes, we have witnessed the birth of the e-prospectus.

Either way, that information is available.

View Federal Government Girls' College, Sagamu Prospectus

View Holy Cross International School Prospectus

But who reads this stuff anyway? Do students really read the information in the prospectus if they don't have to? My guess is No, unless maybe their parents or teachers make them do it. Or if the school requires it so they can maybe learn the school song. That sort of thing.

Plus, some prospectuses are outdated. Mine was, and we're talking about the '90s. Same with the prospectus of some other federal government girls' colleges I knew back then. There was a school prospectus which recommended that parents give their children 100 naira for the entire school term for pocket money (for boarders).

100 naira?! Can you believe it? When some day students were bringing 100 naira to school for lunch money every single day. In the same school.

Regardless of who reads it, I think it's still a relevant point of introduction to a school's philosophy and culture. A student will have 6 years (give or take) to learn all the other stuff that is never included in the prospectus (e.g. the 8 Useful things Boarding School will Teach you).

What was your school prospectus like? Did you even read it? Please share.

Nigerians place a very high premium on education. Translation: they like to acquire degrees. A lot.

If you enter the sitting room (parlor) of a typical Nigerian family, in addition to family pictures, you are likely to see one or more school certificates prominently displayed for the whole world to know that Baba Bisi too went to school. And graduated.

At the most basic level, I would say that you are not considered truly educated unless you have a Bachelor's degree. In fact, some people will argue with you and say that a Master's degree is the minimum requirement to be considered truly educated. I am sure if there were more advanced degrees than PhDs, Nigerians would pursue them too. But until then ....

As much as Nigerians love to acquire degrees or value education, there are not enough university graduates in the country. In fact, there are entire families and villages where there is no single university graduate.

So, you can imagine what a big deal it is when one member of that family, for example, finally breaks through, completes his or her university education and bags that degree. Very big deal.

Naturally, we would expect it to be a blessing. If all goes well, the graduate will land a good job and live a better quality of life than his non-degree wielding counterparts. Not to mention the immeasurable prestige of being recognized as the first (and hopefully not the ONLY) university graduate in that family. There is the expectation that this graduate will succeed financially so that he can give back to his community. You can define community as loosely or as narrowly as you like, but let's assume it includes his immediate family and some extended family members.

Everything is good so far, right?

So, how on earth is being the first university graduate in your family a curse?

I think it can be a curse because of the abyss of endless expectations that are attached to this achievement.

Why?

Because in Nigeria, a lot is expected from a university graduate. I would even say there is more pressure on the guys than on the ladies. The general belief is that a college degree is an automatic ticket to a higher income bracket and quality of life. But, as we all know, that is not always the case.

The expectation that bagging a university degree somehow confers immediate success on the graduate, is in and of itself, pressure. With that expectation can also come additional family responsibilities. The graduate is now expected (since he is supposedly now doing well) to take care of other (usually younger) family members and see to it that not only are their financial needs met, but he is also expected to become some sort of mentor to those coming behind him.

Can somebody say pressure?

Arguably, the same pressure can apply to a non-degree holder or high school dropout who is simply successful at whatever he or she does.

However way you choose to look at it, I believe that in the end, graduating from the university is a really good thing. But it is more important to succeed in your chosen career, and you'll need more than a university degree to achieve long-term success. Education is not limited to the four walls of an institution. Life itself is a teacher and you never stop learning.

What do you think? Is a university education worth all the hype? Kindly share your thoughts.

I think that picture just gave it away, but I'll still spell it out.

You see, if you ever had the <strike>misfortune</strike> privilege of going to the market in Nigeria (or elsewhere for that matter) to get your hair braided as a child, then you're familiar with the scene I am about to describe.

No, it doesn't matter what hairstyle you actually ended up doing or whether you chose to do didi (french braids) or weaving. The process was the same. I already hinted at it here, but here it is in its full glory:

Your mother or father or relative dropped you off at the market and told the hairstylist what style to braid your hair into. Or maybe you got to decide. Or maybe your school already called the hairstyle for you for that week. Doesn't matter. Same result, i.e. you have to get your hair done.

The hair stylist, who was a market woman, not just because she was literally in the market, but also because she probably also sold other items at her stall in addition to braiding hair, agreed, and if there was no one there before you, she would point to an apoti (small stool).

Now, I shall rant about the apoti. Don't worry, I'll still rant about the one thing nobody misses in a bit. But let's dwell on the apoti for a bit, shall we? Good.

The apoti, as I have mentioned, is a small wooden stool. Now, I am not sure who makes the apoti, but I am very sure the only trait necessary for a person to make an apoti, apart from the requisite carpentry skills, is a certain degree of miserliness. Yes, miserliness. Or else, how else do you explain why the apoti is so small (even for a child) and so close to the ground, and no matter how short or long your legs are, they get cramped from sitting on the said apoti. Yes, indeed. Only a miserly carpenter, one who hoards the wood for making apoti so he can make 10 apotis (or 50 chewing sticks) with the same amount of wood he should invest in one good apoti would ...

Okay, I'm done with the apoti bit.

Back to our hair braider.

Now, after sitting your delicate little bum on the apoti, she (the hair braider) positions you for ... the hair braiding, of course. And this is where it gets interesting.

You see, regardless of what hairstyle you choose, the hair braider will pick the same position to braid your hair, i.e. she will turn your head so that you are facing her, and then she will plant your head right between her ...

Oh Lord! I can't even say it.

*wailing loudly at the horrible mental picture*

Just look at the picture for clarification. It has spoken more than a thousand words. But I will still add my own.

It may take a minute of positioning, but oh my goodness, it will hit you right smack in the face. No, not the folds of her wrapper. No, that would be a delightful kindness. Ehn ehn!

I am referring to the smell ... Stench, is more like it, emanating from the place where the market woman has placed your head.

What smell you ask? Okay, I'll give you a hint. It rhymes with kiwi, but it's not a fruit. Let's see, what else? Oh yes, it's yellow and ... I think you get the picture. Yes, indeed, you will get more than a whiff of that post-wiwi* smell.

And that, my friends, is what no one, no girl, no woman misses about braiding her hair in the market. I would hope she doesn't miss it. Or else. Okay, she can't miss it, period!

I will admit that those women are very skilled, especially with didi. But abeg, the price is too high. No, not the price of braiding. Believe me, it's cheaper in the market than in a salon. But the price of enduring that nasty smell for minutes, hours ... Too costly. I pass.

*coughing violently*

Now, I am not sure what horrors young boys faced at the barber's shop, but being a woman who was once a little girl (duh!) I can only speak for myself. And other young girls who had to go through this emmm ... ordeal, week after week. Or until they decided to start braiding their hair in salons. Or at home. Or with those Hausa/Fulani women who can do very tiny braids. Or learnt to braid their hair themselves.

So, that's the answer I was looking for. I wonder what you had in mind when you saw that title. Oya, confess, you had this on your mind too, ba? Abeg, don't give me that look! You weren't thinking of the ilarun (wooden comb) or chart of hairstyles. Or were you? Did you ever braid your hair in the market? Salon, perhaps? Please share your own story!
